Happy New Year

The earth has composed another dance around the Sun
And we mark it with a dance of our own, of jolly good fun.
We celebrate the end of a cycle of seasons
and look for answers to the cosmic mystery, and reasons:

For the way things are, and the nature of things
Like Lucretius’s poem: a 2000 year old hymn
A gift from a mind peering through the gloom of the ages
‘De Rerum Natura’ – the elixir of the sages

Will in 2013 the Zeitgeist move tentatively ahead?
Or will it wallow in mucky ignorance, instead?
Will more persons be blessed with the nature of things
Oh! ‘De Rerum Natura’ – open their eyes and sing!

Sing oh ancient poem of the reasons why
life stings, love hurts – my oh my
Sing oh ancient poem of the reasons how
things are, wounds heal, enemies bow
Sing oh ancient poem of the ways of living
Free of pain to you and others, and full of forgiving
Sing oh ancient poem of the ways to love
Your girl, your friend, a stranger – and the stars above
Sing oh ancient poem of the glory of life
Amongst you all, my friends, free of strife
Sing oh ancient poem of the beauties I see
As I jump from flower to flower, a drunken Bee

Sing oh ancient poem
Sing till it hurts
Sing me a song to love by
And keep away the desert

Sing oh ancient poem
Sing along tambourine
Sing me a song to live by
In 2013
